Maximizing the economic value of process safety management

A properly implemented process safety management program will not only reduce the occurrence of adverse incidents at operating facilities,but will also deliver direct economic benefits to the business.Examples of such benefits include improved reliability,reduced downtime,improved yield,reduced operating and maintenance cost,and of course reduced liabilities and insurance costs.However,process safety performance measurement has traditionally focused on incident tracking and compliance issues.This paper describes a "value-based management" approach toward explicitly recognizing the contribution of process safety management toward achieving business objectives related to profitability,return on investment,and shareholder value.
