MOLCARE is a R&D program on MCFC carried out by Italian and Spanish partners leaded by Ansaldo Ricerche. This presentation refers to the final results obtained in phase 1 of the MOLCARE Programme, with the design, construction and testing of the 100 kW-class MCFC Stack, of a facility to test the stack and a plant to proof the Compact Unit (CU) concept. The stack construction was completed at the end of 1997 in Italy at Ansaldo Ricerche facilities. At the same time in Spain the Guadalix Test Facility was completed and the stack was moved from Italy to Spain. It was conditioned and preliminary tested during summer 1998 for about 1000 hrs. At the beginning of 1999 the conditioned stack was moved back to Italy and placed in the CU-Plant where experimental activities lasted for over 7 months. CU-Plant is a real "proof-of-concept" power plant based on the Sensible Heat Reforming concept and on its integration with the MCFC stack and BoP sub-systems. The experimental results demonstrate the key objectives were satisfactory met both for the CU process and configuration and for components and stack performance. Furthermore the capability to operate on various fuel sources such as natural gas, coal gas and landfill gas without major changes in the BoP was demonstrated.
