An ad hoc network is a collection of mobile nodes that establish and maintain connections purely over wireless connections. These networks do not have any fixed infrastructure like a wired network. Because the nodes are mobile, ad hoc networks have dynamic topology and links are continuously established and broken. An ad hoc routing protocol must therefore provide dynamic routing, where a new path can be created as soon as it is required. In this paper, we analyze the Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) protocol, point out some of its drawbacks, and propose a new protocol, Adaptive Node Rating DSR (ANRD), to provide secure routing for ad hoc networks assuming nonexistence of any key management infrastructure.
