Composite or Hybrid structures are increasingly used in construction of tall buildings in North America. In this keynote paper, the current practices in this field in North America are summarized. The typical structural systems are introduced in five categories: (ⅰ) Frames with composite columns and concrete spandrels; (ⅱ) Frames with composite columns and steel spandrels, (ⅲ) Frames with composite supercolumns and steel girders; (ⅳ) Diagonally braced frames and (ⅴ) Composite shear walls with steel linking girders. Another section will deal with Rehabilitation of a 47-storey tall building using Composite design.
