Building design and construction process, from initiative until demolition, is becoming more complex not only in its infrastructure, communication and information, but also in the number of partners involved. Increasing requirements in terms of cost and time and high demands require better communication and co-ordination. In order to meet these requirements, there is a need for an Intelligent Modelling for Cooperative Engineering (IMCE) environment. In this environment, information must be selected, ordered and made available in an intelligent manner conforming to the needs of each partner, which may vary in character and type, and may conflict at times. Considering the complex as well as soft nature of the information concerned, the need for effective and efficient processing of this information leads us to make use of soft computing technologies. The resulting systems should actively support the user in the building process. This can be achieved by benefiting from existing emerging intelligent technologies. Referring to active research, this paper presents an overview of the IMCE project and provides insights into the state-of-the-art of this project.
