This paper presents an overview of the deconstruction and material recovery efforts being conducted at Fort Chaffee, a former Army installation in Arkansas, United States. This material recovery project is particularly unique since the main goal is to generate revenue from the sale of wood recovered from deconstructed buildings (even wood coated with hazardous lead-based paint (LBP)) as well as experiment with various tools and techniques for the deconstruction of similar wood frame buildings. To address the LBP issues, an innovative LBP removal system will be utilized to "plane" LBP from the wood surface and capture the residue for disposal. The "cleaned" wood will be remanufactured into a variety of marketable products, such as tongue-and-groove (T&G) flooring and ship-lap siding. To reduce the labor component of the building salvage, innovative tools and heavy equipment are being employed, as well as sound removal techniques that are minimally destructive and conducive to efficient material recovery. The data and findings gathered from the project will eventually characterize the cost/benefit of the evolving deconstruction and material recovery processes.
