Janus: Management for Ubiquitous Networked Systems

The emerging next generation of network management must support both the programmable distributed managers and the customized diverse agents on the heterogeneous networked peripherals, in order to do the flexible and scalable management and the fast deployment of new services. Java-based active network for ubiquitous system (Janus) is a management framework using the active networks technology in order to solve the various problems, such as bottleneck and overburden at manager side, of current network management based on client/server model as well as mobile code. This approach centralizes the distributed dynamic managers/agents delegated to the managing clients and/or managed nodes. The main contribution of this paper is to describe the ideas behind our new architecture, illustrate the advantages of using the architecture, and demonstrate that the architecture results in the efficient and flexible network management based on active network philosophy.
