The paper introduces an approach to modelling the process of residual stress gen-and evolution, based on the concept of eigenstrain distribution. The approach has the benefit of sufficient generality to include a wide variety of inelastic deformation processes, such as plastic flow and creep, thermal misfit strains, phase transformation, etc. Capabilities of the proposed approach are demonstrated by developing the fundamental solution for a rectagular distribution of eigenstrain in an infinite elastic plane. Residual stress fields are compared with the classical Eshelby solution for an ellipsoidal inclusion. The approach can be generalised to include more complex distributions of residual stress sources, and can be used in conjunction with experimental techniques for residual stress and inelastic strain measurement. The implications of the proposed technique for the interpretation of diffraction strain measurement are discussed.
