POWERGRID, the largest Transmission utility in the world is operating about 42,000 circuit Kilometers of EHV/ HVDC Transmission lines with 74 substations throughout India and maintained its lines availability more than 98% by adopting state of the art maintenance techniques, condition monitoring of the transmission lines & Hotline maintenance techniques etc. With such a huge network (approximately 1,00,000 towers of different voltage level) the possibility of tower collapse due to failure of components or natural calamities such as storms, landslides, earthquakes, change of river course and due to sabotage by miscreants can not be ruled out. Restoration of lines due to tower collapse by conventional method requires longer outages. For rapid restoration of collapsed transmission line towers, POWERGRID had procured 10 sets of Emergency Restoration System to meet the exigencies. These sets are located at various strategic locations throughout the country to meet the exigencies. Since then, Emergency Restoration System have been utilized extensively not only for restoration of POWERGRID lines but the help was extended to state utilities also in restoration of their tower failures. This paper gives the brief description of Emergency Restoration System and shares the experience of POWERGRID in restoration of collapsed/endangered towers.
