This paper discuses the common misconceptions and mistakes in the application of the IEEE Guide for Safety in AC Substation Grounding (IEEE Standard 80) in the analysis of substation grounding which may lead to significant overdesign or underdesign of grounding systems. The common misconceptions and mistakes include inadequate soil resistivity measurement, inappropriate soil model approximation, inaccurate fault current split calculation, misunderstanding about crushed rock application, and equipotential assumption in grounding analysis. Examples have been presented to show the negative effects these misconceptions may cause. Clarification on these misconceptions will enable better grounding designs following IEEE Standard 80.
