High-voltage transmission systems play an important role for stable and reliable power transmission over long distances. In many countries the economic growth is concentrated on certain areas on one side, whereas generation for example from hydraulic power is far away from industrial areas. It is an ambitious task to provide sufficient amount of electric power especially in regions with fast growing infrastructure. Series capacitors are widely used to improve stability for transmission of electric power over long distances. By means of series capacitors electric power transmission is stable and reliable for distances of 1000 km and more. Typical ac system voltage levels for long distance transmission systems are 420 kV and 500 kV, in some countries also 735 kV-or 765 kV-systems are in operation. However, with the increasing demand for electric power the trend goes to higher voltage levels and higher currents, in ac-systems as well as with de-transmissions. This allows economic and reliable power transmission over even longer distances up to 2000km.
