CHEMICAL ANALYSIS METHODS FOR POWDER METALLURGY PRODUCTS

There exist unique challenges in the analysis of powder metallurgy products, so it should not be surprising that the analytical methods for such materials are significantly different than those used for wrought or cast metals and alloys. Outlines of chemical analysis methods for P/M products are presented in this paper with an eye on the future, when, it is hoped, reference materials representative of P/M products will be available for calibration and validation. The short term goal is to start the process whereby interim methods of chemical analysis may be developed for the P/M industry through peer review and collaborative tests. The ultimate goal is to develop standardized tests which will serve P/M producers and P/M users alike.
