Polypropylene random copolymer resins are used in many injection molding applications in the rigid packaging and consumer durables market segments. These resins offer a balance of stiffness and low haze that is appropriate for many products. However, the use of polypropylene random copolymers is limited because of their relatively low impact toughness, especially at sub-ambient temperatures. A new family of propylene-based performance polymers has been developed with a balance of transparency, stiffness, and toughness. These resins provide the optics and stiffness of polypropylene random copolymers with the higher impact toughness that is normally found in polypropylene impact copolymers. In this paper, an injection molding grade performance polymer is compared to a polypropylene random copolymer and an impact copolymer.
