DOW'S ACQUISITION OF UNION CARBIDE IMPACT ON POLYOLEFIN STRATEGIC BUSINESS UNITS

The acquisition is a good fit with Dow's existing product offering in the plastics and elastomers market segment. There are enough synergistic differences that the combination will benefit both of them and make them a strong contender in polyolefin business in North America. On the chemical side, despite significant overlap between The Dow Chemical Company and Union Carbide Corporation, the only aspects of the their businesses that we expect will come under the scrutiny will be ethanolamines and ethylene amines. The other businesses will be spared mainly due to the presence of several other producers and in some cases due to different end use focuses by the two companies.
