Selection Criteria and Data for Extrusion Coating and Laminating Resins

One of the processing technologies common to packaging is extrusion coating. More recent applications of these techniques include consumer and industrial pouches, highly specialized barrier packages for chemicals and foodstuffs, even single-serve containers for liquids. Extrusion coating is a workhorse technique for applying sealants or other functional coatings onto substrates such as oriented polyester, oriented nylon, foil, or even oriented polypropylene. There are many resin choices, and this paper is intended to offer criteria and data for making those selections. The materials include LDPE, EVA, EAA, Ionomers, EMA, EnBA, Plastomers, and, in the future, metallocene (m)VLDPE.
