Calcium stearate is widely used as an acid neutralizer in polypropylene. Stearates are traditionally made using either a fusion or a precipitation process. Fusion has the advantage of lower production costs and allows for larger particle size powders, but the quality is not suitable for thin film and fiber applications. Stearate produced by precipitation is preferred for thin films and fibers, but is a higher cost process and produces a dusty small particle powder. A process has been developed to produce a calcium stearate as a low dust powder that is suitable for thin films and fibers with less cost than precipitation.
