Over the past thirty years polyethylene has become the preferred pipe material for the distribution of fuel gas throughout the world. The single most important reason for this success is the availability of a leak free butt fusion thermal weld joining system. The leak free performance of polyethylene pipe is allowing its introduction to many applications. This paper addresses one such recent application at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. A hidden but important part of an airport's offering is clearing all aircraft of frozen precipitation during inclement weather. The chemicals utilized for this service are not compatible with general disbursement into the storm water runoff. All runoff must be captured and treated prior to release. Due to these environmental concerns, the renovation at DFW Airport called for the use of a fluid transportation system that would not leak. Many materials were considered with polyethylene being the material of choice. This paper addresses the engineering parameters considered during the design phase and includes discussion of the installation phase with on site photos of the jobsite.
