A series of centrifugal model tests are conducted to investigate the effect of fill improvement of subgrade consisting of mainly Xia-shu clay in Xuzhou-Shanghai segment of Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Railway. Three improvement methods are adopted, namely adding cement, lime and hardener. Both the embankment deformation and the failure mechanism are analyzed. The results show that the improved subgrade can keep good condition when the settlement is within a certain limit, while cracks occur in the embankment if the settlement is beyond the limit.
