Radiosensitization of hematoporphyrin derivative: clinical trial on 69 patients

Abstract: Sixty-nine patients with various malignant tumors were treated with different regimens of radiotherapy or chemotherapy combined with HpD. The immediate response showed that the over-all response rate was 94.2% and complete response rate was 60.9%. The present study suggests that HpD be used as a radiosensitizer with mild side effects but no drug resistance on repeated administrations. Special effects of HpD on radio-resistant tumors, such as malignant melanoma, were observed. It may render radiation effective in advanced or recurrent lesions. Mechanism of radiosensitization of HpD is discussed. Tentative ideas for further investigations are put forward. !5
