Knowledge of elemental composition of combustion and atmospheric aerosols is required for both risk assessment of environmental pollution and apportionment of pollution sources, especially if large part of atmospheric aerosol mass originates from combustion of fossil fuels for home heating and power production. The use of INAA and PEXE techniques appears to be extremely useful for analysis of minute aerosol samples due to the methods' favourable features, such as non-destructive and multielemental character, very low determination limits for many elements, the virtual absence of an analytical blank, and high accuracy of the results obtained, especially by INAA.
