On the announcement in the mid 1990s by the then British Government that the railways in the United Kingdom would be privatised, SIEMENS decided to enter this previously well protected market. Our first success was with the now reputable Class 332 Heathrow Express trains that were the first new trains to be fitted with IGBT inverters and to pass through the newly defined Safety Case certification process. After delivering our second train order, Class 333 to Arriva Trains Northern, we decided to take stock of our position in the market as well as to choose wisely the correct technology for the future that was fast developing at that time. We decided on a long term strategy and full commitment to the United Kingdom market adopting a fresh approach to the industry and to develop a new train which would be a wholly SIEMENS product. The strategy that we adopted has proven to be successful and is summarised here as our P.Q.R.S.T philosophy.
