Use of microwave radiation as an unconventional energy source has been attempted by different research groups world-wide for more than 10 years. Different applications, including reaction engineering and separation steps, environmental engineering, and product syntheses of fine chemicals are among the areas already known. After showing the innovative nature of microwave-assisted processing in chemical synthesis solutions are now needed for appropriate reaction setups. As a contribution to this development, our institute started a close collaboration with a microwave equipment supplier (Microwave Labor Systems (MLS) Ltd, Leutkirch, Germany) with the aim on systems for scale-down strategies using parallel syntheses and combinatorial chemistry as well as systems for scale-up of microwave assisted processes, particularly in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and fine chemical area.
