According to ENV 1993-2:A3, 2 for assessment of a resistance against the lamellar tearing of steel plates loaded in through the thickness direction the Z_z reduction in an area value according to EN 10 164 is used. Experience show that Z_z is not a sufficiently suitable characteristic. From the theory of limit states of materials it follows that the exact characteristic of a resistance against the lamellar tearing is a fracture toughness J_(IZ) and from the practical viewpoint it is KV_z at a minimum service temperature T_(min). In the document the results of the impact and fracture toughness tests on selected steels with various through thickness quality are evaluated. The effect of the welding and buttering on the toughness change in HAZ is evaluated. For assessment of the resistance against the lamellar tearing of steel plates the data of the impact toughness KV_z test arc recommended, the reduction of the area Z_z values can be used as a supplementary characteristic.
