Orientation and Development Strategy of China's Tanker Fleet

With the rapid growth of national economy of China, the consumption of crude oil had an average increase of 6% to 8% over the last 10 years. This generates a great deal of crude oil imports from different countries to meet the dramatic demand. According to the official report, the demand of crude oil will reach 296 to 316 million tons in 2010. About 90 per cent of volume of crude oil import in China is transported by seaborne trades. The geographical locations of crude oil exporters play an important part in determining the number of crude tankers and the size of the tanker fleet. With the trade from the Middle East to China increasing, the average haul rises. So there is a strong demand for crude oil tanker fleet. Although the volume of crude oil import has dramatically changed, only a small percentage is finished by national owned tanker fleet. At present, there are a few major Chinese shipping companies entered the seaborne trade for crude oil imports. Facing the great market demand, it is a good opportunity for China's shipping companies to develop national owned tanker fleet Market orientation and effective strategies should be taken. From a perspective of strategy, a national owned tanker fleet will play an important role in national defence and national economy. At the macroeconomic level, appropriate transport planning can have in assisting overall economic development and strategic deployment of national economy.
