Engineers at CU Aerospace (CUA) and The University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana (UIUC) have developed an innovation to the classical chemical oxygen-iodine laser (COIL) singlet oxygen generator (SOG) based on discharge excitation of molecular oxygen. A number density of ~2.1xl0~(15) of O_2(~1Σ) was measured for a total O_2 flow rate of 7 mmol/s and an O_2 partial pressure of 3.0 Torr. Theory indicates that O_2(~1Δ) concentrations should be 4-10 times the O_2(~1Σ) concentrations.
