The interaction of few-optical-cycles pulses of intensity in the range of 10~(14) W/cm~2 with noble gases is studied experimentally and presented in this paper. In particular, we are considering the generation of odd harmonics of the laser, whose spectrum extends up to the soft X-ray spectral region. The short duration of the laser pulse induce a cycle-to-cycle variation of the peak intensity, and so of the nonlinear phenomena which produces. The processes in this regime, known as non-adiabatic, are also modeled and presented, using a three-dimensional model of the generation and propagation of the laser and the harmonics field. The experimental findings result in good agreement with the model predictions.
