This paper presents the background and the latest progress on China's high level radioactive waste disposal. China started Research and Development (R&D) for HLW disposal as of 1985, and with a plan to build a national repository in 2040. The Beishan area, located in NW China's Gansu province, is the most potential area. During the period 1999-2001 preliminary site characterisation (surface geological mapping, drilling for two bore holes BS01 and BS02) has been conducted and favourite results have been obtained. The IAEA joined China's programme through a Technical Co-operation (TC) project (Project Number:CPR/9/026).
