A Cost Optimization Methodology for Internet Transmission of Semi-Elastic Traffic Flows

A growing number of new Internet applications require high levels of Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. Therefore, many emerging Internet protocols and mechanisms have appeared to ensure end-to-end QoS. Obviously, network operators and service providers will charge the use of network resource reservation in a more expensive way than the classical best-effort service. For this reason, it is essential to minimise the resource reservation when possible. In this paper, we propose a simple method to minimize this cost for semi-elastic data flows. The method is based on a client-server scheme in which the client controls its buffer occupancy to determine when it is necessary to reserve resources or to use a best-effort mode for the transmission maintaining the same connection. We also point out three aspects related to the implementation of the system in a real scenario. For each of them, we propose a simple solution at the application level and, we present the results of the solutions elaborated in the ns-2 simulator that supports our research.
