In this paper, we propose a novel approach to examining 3D image data: Virtual EndoScope. Virtual EndoScope consists of a parallel I/O system for large 3D volume data and various 3D volume visualization systems. The parallel I/O system is highly optimized for 3D volume data and allows various 3D visualization methods to deal with large 3D volume data efficiently. Moreover, this parallel I/O system facilitates implementing and parallelizing 3D volume visualization algorithms by providing a simple and uniform access interface for large 3D volume data.
