In this paper, a new motion-tolerant dissolve detection algorithm for video content analysis is proposed. Dissolve transitions are a popular type of gradual transitions in video sequences. Because the behavior of a dissolve transition is very easily confused with object/camera (local/global) motions, it is difficult to detect a dissolve transition precisely. In this paper, based on a natural dissolve transition model, a new motion-tolerant dissolve detection algorithm using the proposed sum of cumulated weight differences (SCWD) is proposed to detect dissolve transitions. By checking the slop of the SCWD curve (values), the proposed algorithm can discriminate dissolve transitions from object/camera (local/global) motions. Based on the experimental results obtained in this study, as compared with Su et al.'s algorithm, the proposed algorithm can detect dissolve transitions more efficiently and precisely.
