The ultra-precision cutting technique of difficult-to-cut materials such as stainless steels, titanium alloys and so on has been strongly required. The diamond tool used for soft materials such as aluminium alloys, plastics and so on, however, is not available because the wear becomes huge at the short cutting length. Coated-cemented-carbide tool, in the previous report, is found useful for ultra-precision cutting. Cutting force measuring is one of the most important matters for analyzing the cutting phenomena. Using new cutting force measurement equipment, the ultra-precision cutting force of stainless steels with coated-cemented-carbide tool is examined. From the results, the principal cutting force is smaller than the thrust force. The measured principal and thrust cutting forces of stainless steel at the depth of cut of 5μm and feed rate of 2 μm/rev are about 0.5 N and 1.4 N, respectively.
