In the future the evolution of mobile communications towards and beyond 3G will accentuate the need for flexible and evolutionary equipment being able to operate in multi-standard environments. In this context the Software Radio approach is a promising way to tackle many of the technical issues arising from requirements for multi-standard operation, adaptability and cost efficiency. However experimentation is now needed in order to better understand and concretely demonstrate how to realize the expected benefits and take advantage of software radio technology. In this paper a software radio modulation/demodulation testbed for UMTS is described with emphasis on both algorithmic and implementation aspects. Two different implementation alternatives are evaluated and their performance as well as system quality aspects are discussed.
