Spray-on polymer materials have recently become available as a means of improving the water-tightness of tunnel linings made with Fibre Reinforced Shotcrete (FRS). This type of material can be sprayed onto the surface of hardened shotcrete, and, after curing, can then be covered by a further layer of shotcrete to create a composite polymer/FRS tunnel lining. The highly ductile properties of the polymer allow it to bridge cracks that may occur in the FRS, thereby helping to improve resistance to the through flow of water. This investigation has sought to determine the structural capacity of composite polymer/FRS linings by testing the comparative toughness of Round Determinate panels made with neat cast Fibre Reinforced Concrete (FRC), and multi-layered polymer/FRC panels.
