For high molecular weight cationic polyacrylamide, it is usually impracticable to supply it as aqueous solutions containing more than 5 or 10% by weight polymer since its high viscosity. Accordingly it is generally supplied as powders or as reverse phase emulsions in oil, which are either inconvenient in use or contaminated with surfactant and oil undesirable. Thus, the preparation of cationic polyacrylamide in the form of water-in-water emulsion is necessary. In this paper, the polymer water-in-water emulsions were synthesized by copolymerization of acrylamide and cationic monomer via emulsion polymerization. The adding capacity of electrolyte, the proportion of acylamide before and after adding solicitation aids, the dosage of dispersants and chelated aids and the reaction temperature were discussed in detail. The obtained emulsion either can be used as a single retention aid or the cationic polymeric component of microparticle retention systems.
