By different carbonized techniques, the pyrolysis experiments on the thinning wood of Chinese fir, one of the fastest growing tree species in the Southern China, were carried out. With special focus on the basic pyrolysis process of its saw dust and variation of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) on carbonized materials under different carbonization conditions, comprehensive analyses of carbonized material were conducted. Results show, carbonization temperature produces great effects on the property and structure of charcoal surface functional group. The peak width of the C1s spectra of the charcoal carbonized at lower temperatures was broad, and the maximum peak position shifts at the higher binding energy. Combinations of carbon element in wood charcoal of Chinese fir can be divided into five categories: (1)main carbon free of mixed atoms, such as aromatic hydrocarbon, thickened aromatic, graphite-like thickened aromatic; (2)orderless carbon free of mixed atoms, such as aliphatic atoms, carbon attached to the edge of aromatic structure and carbon which joins in interactive formation of microcrystal; (3)carbon atoms generated from oxygen and carbon atom in single-bond, whose formation is C-OH, C-O-C; (4)carbon connected with oxygen in double-bonds, mainly carbon atoms existing in C=O; (5)Carbon atoms formed in O=C-O bonds.
