Visual Perception of Male Physical Attractiveness

At first, this study uses short movie clips by Maya software for viewing and rating the attractiveness. And firstly, this study uses the new parameter, VHI(the body volume divided by the square of the height, defined as Volume Height Index), to visually determine male physical attractiveness based on visual assessment of male images. Fifty-four Hong Kong Chinese (29 male, 25 female) were invited to rate the 25 wire-frame Caucasian male body images in terms of attractiveness after viewing the movie clips. The results showed that human observers may first uses VHI as a visual cue to determine the male attractiveness; To fine tune the judgment, observers may then use body proportions, the most important of which are the ratio of waist circumference to stomach circumference(viz. a measure of the big stomach over waist), the ratio of waist circumference to chest circumference (viz. a measure of the strong trunk over waist), and the ratio of the stomach height to the chin height(viz. a measure of the length of the trunk over the chin height). It also appears that the effect of body physical parameters on the perception of female physical attractiveness conforms to Stevens' power low of psychophysics.
