Implementing Server-side Scripting with XQuery for Web Applications

With the tremendous growth of XML data on the web, XQuery is emerging as the standard language for processing XML data. Many people only know XQuery as a language for querying XML, but it even can be server-side scripting for dynamic web page generation in an XML-backend application. For the purpose of server-side scripting, using XQuery to access HTTP GET/POST requests and track session data becomes necessary. This paper introduces a new approach to create a web application with XQuery, as well as fills the gap of server-side scripting. By means of an example of on-line shopping carts, we propose and analyse several different methods to access a user's HTTP GET/POST variables and track the user's session data. As a result, those methods can successfully attain efficient communications between clients and web servers.
