High-position Seismic Isolation of Press Center Structures at Shanghai International Circuit

An engineering application of a combined isolation system to Press Center structures at Shanghai International Circuit (SIC) is presented in this paper. Four groups of the combined isolation system, which is composed of a center-located pot-type bearing and four surrounding laminated rubber bearings, are designed to connect an upper steel mega-truss structure to its two supporting structures at about 30 m level, so as to form a high-position isolation system. The engineering outline of the project is first introduced. Then, the features and working principles of the high-position isolation system are described. Followed is the detailed design of the isolation system. Finally, the seismic responses of the structures with the isolation system are calculated and compared with those of the structures with hinged joints. The analytical results show that both the structural seismic responses and the internal forces in the large-span mega-truss structure produced by the variation of environmental temperature can be reduced significantly by installing the high-position isolation system. To date, the project has been completed.
