The appraising technology in dam severity is urgently needed in China. It can ap-praise the severity of dams and support for decision-making. Based on the appraising technol-ogy and the expert's experience on dam safety, the reservoir dam diseases and dangers are di-vided into five grades. The grades of dam severity are proposed and the rules to convert be-tween qualitative and quantitative data are established. Nine index systems are set up to ap-praise the sickness and danger severity of dams, including the capacity to withstand floods,seepage, stability, distortion and crack, anti-seismic ability, metal structure, project quali-ty, operation and management and site inspection. Using the law of linear weighted sum,this paper proposes the model of influence coefficient to assess the sickness and danger sever-ity of dams and two methods to calculate the weights. Finally synthetic appraising model ofdam severity is established. An example is cited to explain the operability, feasibility andpracticability by showing the ways and steps of using this method.
