The presentation focuses on soil data for foundation design of offshore structures on clay subjected to cyclic wave loading, but the presentation is also relevant for foundation design of structures subjected to cyclic loading in general, including breakwaters, harbours, storm surge barriers, near shore LNG terminals, wind power structures, railroads, bridges exposed to drifting ice, etc. The foundation design topics influenced by cyclic loading and the cyclic clay data needed to analyse the various foundation design topics are identified. It is shown what kind of laboratory tests that are required and how the laboratory test data can be interpreted to establish the cyclic soil parameters needed in the design analyses. Examples of cyclic parameters for Drammen Clay and clays from various offshore locations are included. Calculation methods are briefly described to show how the cyclic soil data can be applied in foundation design analyses. Finally, reference is given to prediction and backcalculation of model test results and prototype observations that verify the calculation methods.
