Khatoon-Abad Copper Smelter: the first Iranian flash smelter

National Iranian Copper Industries Company (N.I.C.I.Co.) has planned to increase its annual smelting capacity by 80,000 tonnes by implementing Flash smelting technology. Khatoon-Abad is a new smelter, located 45 km from the city of Shahr Babak in the province of Kerman. The first phase of the project will be completed by the end of this year and startup is planned for January 2004. The plant is designed to process 985 tonnes of copper concentrate per day to produce the anode copper. This paper presents an overview of the smelting process, process features, principal equipment and the project expansion plan.
