At present, the erosion resistance of semi-rigid base materials is relatively poor in China. Voids beneath the concrete slab are common, which accordingly results in premature failure. This paper first analyzed the range of hydrodynamic pressure on base materials under traffic loading. Secondly, with considering actual erosion conditions in the field, an aerodynamic erosion device with adjustable water pressure was developed. An erosion resistance index for base materials was then proposed for estimating the potential of voids beneath the concrete slab. Furthermore, several semi-rigid materials were tested under the aerodynamic erosion device and the test results provide the potential of estimating voids beneath the concrete slab.
