摘要

Asphalt overlay along with cracking and seating concrete slabs is often used for rehabilitating old, cracked/damaged concrete pavements. The concrete slab size after cracking and seating has great impact on the new asphalt overlay performance. However, selecting cracked slab size is very empirical and lack of theoretical basis. This paper employed a 3-dimensional finite element program to investigate the influence of the cracked slab size on stresses due to traffic loading, thermal stress, and the combined traffic and thermal stress in the asphalt overlay and the compressive stress at the top of foundation layer. Based on the analysis results, reasonable cracked slab size for cracking and seating old concrete pavements is proposed in this paper.
