Hysteresis nonlinearity of giant magnetostrictive material (GMM) makes it difficult to control giant magnetostrictive actuator (GMA), which has serious influence on the positioning precision of GMA. In order to describe and simulate the hysteresis characteristic of GMA exactly, the classical Preisach operator was modified and the discretization model was given in this paper. A prototype of GMA and the measurement system were designed, and the major hysteresis loop of GMA and the first order reversal curves were measured exactly. The parameter table of Preisach model was built based on the experimental data, then the hysteresis Preisach modified model of GMA was presented. The experimental results were close to model-simulating results with a max deviation of 0.4 um, which indicates that the hysteresis model built was exact.
