In this paper a rational approach for predicting the flexural or shear capacity at ultimate of RC beams strengthened by externally bonded FRP sheets is presented. The behaviour of strengthened beams is modelled by using the truss analogy method in conjunction with the theory of plasticity. Compared to current truss models, this proposal offers the advantage of being capable of describing some important failure modes which are influenced by bond slip, such as debonding. What is presented here is an extension of a similar model, firstly developed by the authors for beams strengthened in flexure. It also aims to simulate the behaviour of beams reinforced in shear and implement a versatile analytical model suitable for a wide range of applications. The reliability of the model is validated by comparing the calculated strengths with some experimental results previously obtained by the authors. Furthermore, a comparison with a database of experimental results presented in literature by many authors is carried out.
