Managing a large network manually is a cumbersome job. Effective network management and performance calls for efficient algorithms discovering network topology automatically, and also mandates for knowing the boundaries of the network. This paper discusses three boundary-aware techniques to help determine the discovery of network management scope. We incorporate a LAN-based technique with our proposed topology discovery algorithm to have well-defined boundary-aware topology discovery. Our topology discovery algorithm does not totally rely on SNMP-MIB or ICMP echo request/reply, Trace route, etc. as some earlier works do. Our approach only requires SNMP agent on managed switches and routers. Rest of network elements need not have SNMP agent enabled. We propose an efficient algorithm not only to find available network elements but also to find appropriate timeouts and delays in the network along with boundary aware technique. Our implementation requires access to only one endpoint to perform the queries needed for topology discovery.
