Integrated Coastal Zone - Data Research Project (ICZMap~R)

1. Through the project it has proved technically feasible to join datasets from OS, BGS and UKHO across the coastal zone 2. Users found ICZMap data a major improvement in mapping of the coastal zone 3. Feedback during the project highlighted the vital importance of the coastal zone to a wide and enormously diverse range of sectors 4. The market appears genuinely interested in ICZMap data; 85% of those asked would find the combined data useful, and an indicative proportion of those who used the data were supportive in its application to Shoreline Management Plans. 5. ICZMap would contribute to the delivery of a number of Government and European policies, initiatives and directives which impact on the coastal zone 6. There is a key requirement for common vertical datum referencing systems. This project has created a cartographic solution fit for purpose in many uses. Beyond this an academic approach is approved by this project and will be undertaken by the UKHO. 7. The perception and use of digital coastal datasets varies with the needs and expertise of the users. There is no universal requirement with regard to many issues, including, delivery format, scale, horizontal or vertical datums. 8. Lack of data within the near-shore between MLW and approximately 10 m water depth is a major constraint on full integration across the coastal zone. 9. Agreements need to be finalised between agencies on:- 9.1. an agreed common coastline 9.2. a process for creating a TIN traversing the coastal zone. 9.3. An approach to funding of the considerable amount of work needed to roll-out beyond pilot 9.4. Rollout of ICZMap on a UK wide scale will require substantial investment and commitment on the behalf of the three organisations. This could only be embarked upon with the approval and sponsorship of Government.
