NEW MID-ATLANTIC OBSERVATIONS OF THE DEPTH OF CLOSURE

This paper analyzes multiple annual surveys of profile lines along Dare County and Cape Fear, North Carolina for the occurrence of the Depth of Closure (DoC), the depth offshore at which bottom changes are negligible (here ＜ 25 cm). These data extend the application of DoC to a wider range of environments. DoC was observed for the lines near Cape Fear. For the 144 lines from Dare County, DoC could be determined for 71%.. Lines that did not close were generally associated with regions of higher long-term erosion rates and complex three-dimensional bathymetry.
