Preparation of High Surface Area Activated Carbon Cloth by Chemical Activation and Characterization of Its Pore Structure

A series of activated carbon cloths(ACC) were prepared from polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based preoxidized cloth(OF) andrncarbonized cloth(CF) by chemical activation using potassium hydroxide(KOH) as activated agent. The variables in thisrnprocess such as raw material (RM), ratio of KOH to raw material?, activated temperature(T) and activated time(t)werernstudied in order to optimize this process. The most important parameters in KOH activation were found to be RM and R. Trnand t were other variables which had high effect on pore structure evolution. The relationships between pore structure andrnadsorption ability were also studied. The pore structure was charactered from microporosity to macroporosity using DensityrnFunctional Theory(DFT). Under the experimental conditions investigated, the optimum conditions for preparing activatedrncarbon cloth with high BET surface area from OF are identified :R=75%, T=800-850℃ , t = 30min; The optimum conditionsrnfor preparing activated carbon cloth with high BET surface area from CF are identified :R=160%.
