It has been demonstrated that PtRu could be plated ontothe surface of carbon nanotubes by electroless plating. The resultingrnelectrcatalysts were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) andrncyclic voltammetry. XPS analysis revealed that the catalysts contained mostly Pt(0) and Ru(0), with a little of Pt(II), Pt(IV)rnand Ru(IV). The PtRu/CNTs catalysts had high electrocatalytic activities for methanol oxidation over that of the PtRu/VulcanrnXC72 electrocatalyst. Test runs on a single stack polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell showed that this electrocatalyst isrnvery promising for fuel cell applications.
